About Catherine Kaufer

I’ve called the Bay Area home for my entire life. I was born in San Jose, raised in Lafayette, and attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga. Things started to move fast as I reached adulthood: I graduated college, got married, was recruited by IBM, and bought my first house—all in the same year.

In 1993, IBM was conducting a big downsizing and buyout program. Since I was pregnant with my second daughter at the time, and didn’t want to commute to San Francisco with two babies in the house, I asked them to buy me out. “You’ll never find a better job,” they warned me.

“Watch me,” I said.

Within a few years, I had not only found a better job, but I had found the best job I could have asked for. I earned my real estate broker’s license to manage some family properties, and wound up buying and selling some fixer-uppers around the Tri-Valley area. I found that I loved the work, and loved the people I worked with even more. In 2000, I began working for Alain Pinel in Danville, helping others buy and sell real estate. It’s always been my favorite thing to be able to go into a house and just know who it should belong to.

Of course, the flexibility that came with the job was a huge bonus for me as a mother of two. And while the girls kept us on our toes, my husband George and I were determined not to lose sight of each other during those busy parenting years. In 2005, we took a trip to Hawaii without our daughters. My sister-in-law had challenged us not to talk about our daughters for the whole week: to see how much we still had in common.

We really had to dig deep! We focused on rediscovering our identities as individuals and as a couple, and we learned to grow together. We still focused on our daughters, but we also made it a priority to just be together so that it wouldn’t be a shock when they left the house. No marriage is perfect, of course, but you have to work at it and make it the best you can. We made a very conscious effort to do just that, and it was a great awakening. George and I looked forward to spending many more together. But there was no way of knowing what lay ahead of us.

On May 5th, 2015, George was hit by a car while cycling. I got a phone call saying he was life-flighted to the hospital and was in serious condition, but I didn’t know much else. I called friends and family and told them to come, and I drove myself to the hospital. I brought my bible and my journal, because I expected it would be a long recovery.

But as soon as they asked me to sit down, I knew what that meant. George passed away shortly after I arrived.

The community rallied around my family. The support was incredible. I didn’t know how much we had impacted those around us until I saw the church overflowing at George’s memorial service. Losing George helped me to understand just how fragile—and therefore how precious—life is. Our time on earth is so short, and we have to enjoy every day we’re given.

My daughters, Janelle and Megan, are two incredible young women. Their journey after losing their father has been an extraordinary thing to witness. Together, the three of us are looking forward to what’s in store for the future, and thanking God for the time we had with George.

As I looked toward my own future, I knew that I was called to minister to others. With the help of a miniature horse, who we named Zebedee, and a miniature Australian Shepherd, called Theodore, I formed “Mini and Me Ministries”. I spend my spare time training my miniature horse and dog to be therapy animals. We work with kids who are sick or have special needs, as well as seniors and veterans. It’s a true joy to bring smiles and hope to people just by introducing them to Zeb and Theo. I’m always looking to give to my community, because so many people are hurting in different ways.

Helping those around me has become my passion, and I’m so grateful that my real estate career enables me to do that every day. I keep each client’s best interests at heart, and I always strive to add something special to their lives. I’ve been in the industry for nearly twenty years, and my business is continually growing stronger.

To further improve the quality of my service, I recently partnered with an exciting and innovative agency—Fusion Real Estate Network. They provide me with administrative and marketing support so that I can focus the bulk of my time and energy directly on my clients. It’s satisfying to know that I can rest easy being part of such a capable team, and still work under my own name and my own principles.
